State coastal resources commission schedules two-day meeting in New Bern

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) is scheduled to hold its regular business meeting on August 27 and 28 at the Tryon Palace – History Center in New Bern. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on August 27 and continue at 9 a.m. on August 28. Members of the public are invited to attend either in person or online.

A public input and comment period is set for 3:00 p.m. on August 27, with each speaker limited to three minutes at the chair’s discretion. The commission noted that, due to technical difficulties, the recording of the August 27 livestream will be posted later on the CRC website.

The Coastal Resources Advisory Council will not convene in August.

On August 27, agenda items include consideration of variance requests from petitioners Krichman (Carolina Beach, Artificial Turf within Buffer) and Hreha-Caruso (Frisco Covered Deck within Buffer), periodic review of existing rules, adoption of several administrative code amendments related to urban waterfronts, Jockey’s Ridge Area of Environmental Concern (AEC), use standards for ocean hazard area exceptions, approval of fiscal analysis for general permits regarding bridge and culvert replacement, and approval of the Bogue Banks Beach Management Plan. A proposed closed session concerning Ready v. CRC, Carteret County, case number 24 CVS 1000 pursuant to N.C.G.S. §143-318.11(a)(3), is also listed.

On August 28, topics include periodic review of rules for the North Carolina Coastal Reserve, updates from the annual rule review process, an overview and science panel report on inlet hazard area boundaries, consideration of approval for oceanfront and inlet erosion rates and setback factors, as well as litigation updates relevant to the commission.
