NCDEQ’s Division of Coastal Management is set to hold a spring training workshop on May 6-7 in Swansboro. This workshop aims to equip local permit officers from the central and southern areas of North Carolina’s 20 coastal counties with necessary skills.
The cooperative efforts between state and local government programs play a key role in the Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA). Counties with locally adopted Implementation and Enforcement Plans can process CAMA minor permits within their jurisdictions, thereby actively managing coastal resources and enhancing public service for residents.
“These training sessions are not just about learning, but also help DCM staff build stronger, more collaborative relationships with local governments by making sure goals, expectations and workflows align for the long-term success of coastal management,” stated Tancred Miller, division director of the Division of Coastal Management.
The training will cover a range of topics including updates on CAMA rules, policy updates, permit processing, legal updates regarding notifications for adjacent riparian property owners, planning, CAMA Major Permit Section updates, and the Division’s updated map viewer. Participants will also receive instruction on section 404 wetlands, compliance and enforcement, along with fieldwork focused on identifying specific coastal features.
