South Carolina man arrested in Apex for threatening to kill the president

Daniel R. Swain, 41, of Summerville, South Carolina, was arrested by the United States Secret Service on Apr. 27 in Apex after being accused of threatening to take the life of the President of the United States. The arrest followed a federal criminal complaint signed by a U.S. Magistrate Judge. Authorities said concerned citizens contacted the Apex Police Department when they saw “HEADED TO WSH TO KILL THE PRES” written in white marker on Swain’s car window.

Swain is charged with making threats against the president under Title 18, United States Code Section 871(a). If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

Ellis Boyle, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced the arrest and said that both the Secret Service and Apex Police Department are investigating. Assistant U.S. Attorney Logan Liles is prosecuting this case.
