Senator Thom Tillis, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, said on March 13 that the criminal investigation into Chairman Powell is weak and frivolous. Tillis also addressed the potential impact of the investigation on the confirmation process for Kevin Warsh as the next Federal Reserve Chair.

The statement from Tillis comes at a time when questions about Federal Reserve independence and leadership are drawing national attention. The outcome of this investigation could affect both public trust in financial institutions and future appointments to key economic positions.

“This ruling confirms just how weak and frivolous the criminal investigation of Chairman Powell is and it is nothing more than a failed attack on Fed independence. We all know how this is going to end and the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office should save itself further embarrassment and move on. Appealing the ruling will only delay the confirmation of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed Chair,” Tillis said.

Tillis has previously won two closely contested Senate races in North Carolina. In 2020, he defeated Cal Cunningham in the general election with 48.7% of the vote compared to Cunningham’s 46.9%, according to official results. In 2014, he won against Kay Hagan with 48.8% over Hagan’s 47.3%, as reported by election data.

The broader implications of this situation may influence not only current investigations but also future nominations for high-level federal positions.
