Ted Budd, U.S. Senator for North Carolina, said that the United States must reverse years of economic disadvantage caused by China. He commended both the Trump administration and the current administration for their efforts to protect American interests through tariffs and trade talks. The statement was made on X.

“No country has taken advantage of Americans more than China,” said Budd. “It’s time to turn that around. President Donald J. Trump has a plan to get the job done. This administration is negotiating with our friends to lower trade barriers, level the playing field, and grow our economy.”

On April 2, 2025, former President Donald Trump announced a new tariff policy imposing a 10% baseline tariff on all imports and a 34% reciprocal tariff specifically on Chinese goods, effectively raising the rate to 54%. According to Business Insider, Trump labeled the initiative “Liberation Day” and framed it as a strategy to boost U.S. manufacturing and reduce dependency on foreign goods. The policy sparked sharp reactions from lawmakers and economists, with critics warning of potential inflation and international trade retaliation.

In 2024, the U.S. goods trade deficit with China reached $295.4 billion, marking a 5.8% increase from the previous year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. imports from China totaled $438.9 billion, while exports stood at $143.5 billion. The sectors most affected by this imbalance include electronics, machinery, and textiles, reflecting ongoing challenges in U.S.-China trade dynamics.

The U.S. international trade deficit in goods and services expanded by $133.5 billion in 2024, a 17% increase from the previous year. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, exports rose by 3.9% to $3.22 trillion, while imports climbed by 6.6% to $3.76 trillion. This growing gap underscores the difficulties in balancing trade flows amid global market shifts and ongoing negotiations for improved access and reduced tariffs.

Senator Budd has represented North Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2023 after serving in the House of Representatives. According to his official Senate website, Budd serves on the Armed Services, Commerce, Small Business, and Joint Economic Committees. His policy focus includes national security, economic competitiveness, and supporting fair trade practices that benefit American manufacturers and workers.
