Rowan County announced on May 5 that it will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed expansion of the landfill at 789 Campbell Rd in Woodleaf, North Carolina. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Woodleaf Fire Department, located at 3500 NC 801 Hwy in Woodleaf.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform community members about the proposed expansion and allow them to speak with county staff. Attendees may drop in at any time during the event. For those unable to attend, meeting materials and a video presentation will be posted on the county’s website.

According to Rowan County officials, “The proposed expansion is within the boundaries of the existing landfill property. It would make it easier for operations, double the landfill capacity, and improve environmental protections for our groundwaters.” The county said a site study is being prepared for submission to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality later this year.

Community members seeking more information are encouraged to contact Rowan County Environmental Management Department or visit www.rowancountync.gov/EM. Those needing translation services or Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations can contact Kelly Natoli, Assistant County Manager.

While local infrastructure projects like this landfill expansion move forward, recent data show that educational outcomes remain an important issue in Rowan County schools. Of senior students taking portions of the ACT exam during the 2022-23 school year in Rowan County school districts, between roughly seven percent and twenty-three percent were considered ready for college depending on subject area; similar results were seen among juniors according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Broader implications of this project include potential changes in waste management capacity and environmental protection measures for residents near Woodleaf as well as ongoing engagement opportunities between local government and community members.
