David Rouzer, Representative of North Carolina, said that the Save Our Bacon Act will protect local pork producers from out-of-state regulations and bolster the state’s agricultural leadership. The statement was made on X.
“I proudly co-introduced the Save Our Bacon Act with Congresswoman Hinson,” said David Cheston Rouzer, U.S. Representative from North Carolina. “North Carolina is a national leader in pork production, and this bill ensures the men and women behind that success are not burdened by another state’s regulations. I’m committed to standing up for our hardworking farmers and ensuring their voices are heard in Washington.”
The Save Our Bacon Act was introduced to counteract the effects of California’s Proposition 12. This legislation imposes stringent animal welfare standards on pork sold within the state and has been criticized by lawmakers for increasing costs and disrupting interstate commerce. However, animal rights groups defend the measure, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
According to the North Carolina Pork Council, pork production in North Carolina contributes over $10 billion annually to the state’s economy and supports more than 44,000 jobs, establishing it as a leading pork-producing state.
A 2024 analysis by the National Pork Producers Council indicated that Proposition 12 has resulted in higher compliance costs and increased pork prices nationwide. Some farms have altered their operations or exited the market due to stricter housing rules.
Rouzer is a Republican U.S. Representative from North Carolina who serves on the House Agriculture Committee. He is recognized for his advocacy for farmers and leadership in agricultural policy, according to Ballotpedia.
