Representative Greg Murphy of North Carolina has said that the One Big Beautiful Bill offers broad tax cuts and curbs federal waste, countering criticisms from Democrats. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
“Democrats have lied a lot about the One Big Beautiful Bill,” said Gregory Francis Murphy, U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 3rd congressional District (R). “The truth is, we extended tax cuts to allow all Americans to keep more of their hard-earned income. And eliminated waste, fraud, and abuse.”
The One Big Beautiful Bill, passed by Congress in 2025, includes provisions such as tax cuts for tips and overtime pay, a permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax law, and significant reductions to federal programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). According to The Daily Beast, the bill also increases funding for defense and border enforcement. It has drawn criticism for allegedly favoring wealthy taxpayers while cutting safety net programs. Public opinion polls indicate net disapproval margins as high as 22%.
According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, the bill is projected to increase the federal deficit by $3.4 trillion over the next decade. This estimate reflects both tax reductions and expanded spending, with much of the fiscal impact linked to the permanent extension of tax cuts originally enacted in 2017. Critics argue that this undermines fiscal responsibility.
As reported by Axios, under this legislation, the average American is expected to receive an annual federal tax cut of $3,752. However, wealthier regions are anticipated to benefit disproportionately. For instance, residents in Teton County, Wyoming, are projected to receive an average tax reduction of $37,373, highlighting what some see as a skewed benefit toward high-income earners despite broader tax relief.
