Greg Murphy, a representative from North Carolina, has expressed concerns regarding the current admissions practices of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), suggesting they may jeopardize student success and patient safety. Murphy called for a change in leadership, making his statement on the social media platform X.

“Tragically those in charge of Medical Education AAMC are setting up students to fail and patients to be harmed,” said Gregory Francis Murphy, U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 3rd congressional District (R). “Discrimination in admissions will lead to patient harm. It is past time for new leadership and new direction AAMC.”

Recent discussions about AAMC’s medical school admissions policies have focused on diversity initiatives. According to the Wall Street Journal, supporters argue that a more diverse physician workforce offers significant benefits, while critics worry about potential impacts on academic standards. The AAMC has stressed the need to balance equity and merit in its guidance to medical schools nationwide.

The AAMC reports that underrepresented minority enrollment in U.S. medical schools increased from 13% in 2013 to over 18% in 2023. Studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggest that workforce diversity correlates with improved patient satisfaction and health outcomes for minority groups.

A 2024 analysis by U.S. News & World Report indicates that leading medical schools employing holistic, diversity-focused admissions maintain graduation rates and board exam scores comparable to or exceeding those of less-diverse institutions, implying these policies do not undermine academic excellence.

Murphy is a Republican U.S. Representative from North Carolina’s 3rd District. He is also a practicing physician and former chief of urology, serving on the House Education and Workforce Committee, where he advocates for high standards and evidence-based education policy.

According to its official website, the AAMC is a nonprofit organization established in 1876 representing accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada. It aims to enhance health through education, research, and advocacy and is governed by a board of directors and CEO.
