Richard Hudson, Representative of North Carolina, said that Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state rewards Hamas and undermines Israel. He called for strong U.S. opposition to this move. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
“I unequivocally stand with Israel and condemn Canada’s recognition of a so-called Palestinian state,” said Richard Lane Hudson, U.S. Representative from North Carolina. “Gaza is controlled by the murderous terrorist group Hamas- who still hold hostages, are stealing food aid and are to blame for the mass starvation in Gaza. The recognition of a so-called Palestinian state would be rewarding the very people responsible for the suffering and the starvation. This move doesn’t advance peace, it rewards terrorism, fails to recognize the hostages and undermines our ally Israel.”
Canada’s policy on recognizing Palestine has come under renewed scrutiny. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Canada supports a two-state solution but will only formally recognize Palestine as a state when Israel’s security is ensured and peace negotiations progress, according to the Globe and Mail.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, since October 2023, there have been more than 130 hostages held in Gaza. Aid deliveries have fluctuated, and over 80% of Gaza’s population now requires humanitarian assistance.
A 2024 analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations found that while some countries like Norway, Ireland, and Spain have recently recognized Palestine, most G7 nations, including Canada and the United States, have not. This indicates sharp international differences on the issue.
Hudson is a Republican U.S. Representative from North Carolina who serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He has a record of supporting U.S.-Israel relations and expressing caution regarding Palestinian state recognition, as reported by Ballotpedia.
