The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michelle Baker Thompson on April 11 after receiving reports of erratic driving near Fairwood Road in Trinity. Deputies found a vehicle stationary on Fairwood Drive with the driver slumped over, and identified the driver as Thompson, age 50.
Authorities said that after waking Thompson and having her exit the vehicle, they conducted a search and discovered illegal substances, drug paraphernalia, and an open container of alcohol. She was taken to the Randolph County Detention Center. The magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of fentanyl, three counts of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor display fictitious tag, and misdemeanor open container of alcohol. No bond was issued for Thompson. Her first court appearance was scheduled for April 13 in Randolph County District Court.
This incident comes as local educational data shows challenges facing youth in Randolph County. Of 1,226 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in county school districts during the 2022-23 school year, only 195 (15.9%) were considered ready for college according to state education data. Among juniors taking science that year, just 189 out of 1,329 (14.2%) met college readiness benchmarks according to state education data.
Reading scores showed slightly higher rates: among seniors taking reading on the ACT during that period, 289 out of 1,226 (23.6%) demonstrated college readiness according to state education data, while among juniors it was 281 out of 1,329 (21.1%) according to state education data. Math performance lagged behind; only 160 seniors (13.1%) and just 134 juniors (10.1%) were considered ready for college-level math work according to state education data.
The arrest highlights ongoing public safety efforts by law enforcement as well as broader community concerns related to substance use and educational achievement.
