State recreational water quality officials have announced the lifting of a precautionary swimming advisory in Oak Island. The advisory, initially posted on May 28, was put in place at the oceanfront area near Crowell Street due to floodwaters being pumped from flooded streets onto the beach. This measure was necessary to maintain road accessibility for emergency vehicles.
Floodwaters can potentially contain pollutants such as wildlife and pet waste, oil and gasoline from parking lots, and waste from septic systems or sewers. The decision to lift the advisory comes after the receding of floodwaters and cessation of pumping activities.
The N.C. Recreational Water Quality Program regularly samples 222 sites along the state’s coastal waters, with most sampling conducted weekly between April and October.
