North Carolina’s job market sees stability in April with minor changes

The unemployment rate in North Carolina for April 2025 remained steady at 3.7 percent, the same as March’s revised figure. Nationally, the unemployment rate also held firm at 4.2 percent.

Compared to a year ago, North Carolina’s unemployment rate saw a slight increase of 0.1 percentage point. The number of employed individuals decreased by 81 over the month to reach a total of 5,098,151 but increased by 1,063 compared to last year. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed rose by 1,173 over the month to a total of 196,360 and saw an annual increase of 7,959.

In terms of employment sectors, seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm employment rose by 18,100 in April to reach a total of 5,094,100 jobs. Notable industry gains were seen in Professional & Business Services (4,500), Trade, Transportation & Utilities (4,000), Leisure & Hospitality Services (2,800), Private Education & Health Services (2,200), Manufacturing (2,100), Other Services (1,500), Government (900), Construction (200), Information (200), and Mining & Logging (100). Financial Activities was the only major sector experiencing a decline with a decrease of 400 jobs.

Since April 2024, Total Nonfarm jobs have grown by 76,700 positions. This includes an increase in the Total Private sector by 60,900 and Government jobs rising by 15,800. Key industries that experienced growth include Private Education & Health Services with an addition of 20,300 jobs; Professional & Business Services with an increase of 17,800; Government with a rise of 15,800; Trade, Transportation & Utilities adding 11,300; Construction gaining 6,700; Other Services up by 5,400; Leisure & Hospitality Services increasing by 3,300; Financial Activities growing by 1,700; and Mining & Logging adding another 300 positions. Conversely over the year period from April last year to this year Manufacturing saw a reduction of about 5,300 jobs while Information lost around about 600 positions.

The next update on unemployment figures is expected on Wednesday May 28 2025 when county-level data for April will be published.
