The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries has commenced the 2025 application period for its shellfish lease and aquaculture program. Applications are being accepted until August 1 from individuals, businesses, and partnerships interested in leasing public coastal waters to cultivate oysters or clams.
Shellfish aquaculture plays a role in supporting North Carolina’s working waterfronts while providing economic and environmental benefits to coastal communities. The division offers guidance and technical support to help applicants comply with state requirements and develop effective lease operations. Application materials and additional details can be found at deq.nc.gov/shellfish-lease#ShellfishLeaseApplications-4100.
