The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources announced on March 26 that it is accepting statewide proposals for projects focused on stream restoration, water-based restoration, and water management. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2026.
The initiative aims to support local and state efforts to improve waterways and enhance water-based recreation across North Carolina. Officials say the grants are intended to help communities address environmental concerns related to streams and stormwater while also encouraging public access to recreational opportunities.
According to the announcement, the current spring 2026 application cycle for the Water Resources Development Grant Program offers two types of funding. The State & Local program provides cost-sharing grants covering up to half of non-federal project costs. Another set of grants supports stream restoration projects on agricultural lands in partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Applications for EQIP-related projects will be accepted until July 30, 2026.
The Division typically allocates $3 million annually for state and local projects, as well as $2 million each year specifically earmarked for EQIP-supported initiatives. More details about eligibility requirements, past funded projects, and interactive story maps can be found on the Water Resources Development Grant program website.
