The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Flood Resiliency Blueprint program will hold a public information session on March 25 at 6 p.m. The session aims to provide an overview of the state’s flood mitigation planning initiative, which is based on scientific research and stakeholder input. The public can attend the meeting virtually via Webex.

During the event, attendees will learn about the program’s online decision support tool and ongoing work on River Basin Action Strategies. The Blueprint supports planning, evaluation, and implementation of strategies to improve flood resilience across North Carolina. It represents the largest statewide investment in proactive flood mitigation in state history. The program provides local governments and other organizations with data, tools, and processes to guide investments that reduce flood risk, fund priority projects, and address gaps in mitigation efforts.

Since 2024, the Blueprint has funded 81 flood resilience projects totaling more than $40 million in six river basins: Neuse, French Broad, White Oak, Tar Pamlico, Cape Fear, and Lumber.

The online decision support tool is a web application that uses data and models to help users assess flood risk and vulnerability. It allows users to explore and define actions for flood resilience as well as evaluate and prioritize those actions.

The program also plans to deliver a River Basin Action Strategy for each basin. These strategies will outline projects and funding approaches aimed at reducing flooding impacts, minimizing damage, and improving communities’ long-term ability to recover from disasters.

There will be an opportunity for questions during the public information session. Questions may also be submitted by email to blueprint@deq.nc.gov.
