North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Reid Wilson visited the Bladen County school system on Wednesday, September 10, to deliver donated school supplies. The visit took place at Tar Heel School, a pre-K through 8th grade campus in Tar Heel, where Wilson delivered 26 boxes of supplies.
This event is part of Governor Stein’s 2025 School Supply Drive, which is organized in partnership with the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU). The initiative involves the Office of the Governor, Cabinet agencies, and SECU’s network of 275 branches working together to collect and distribute school supplies to all 115 public school districts in North Carolina. The drive aims to support students and educators throughout the state.
“DEQ employees were eager to support teachers and students through this school supply drive, and it’s great to have a chance to talk with students about clean air, clean water and clean energy,” said DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson.
The supplies distributed during this visit were donated by staff from the Department of Environmental Quality across North Carolina.
Tar Heel School began serving students last year. The campus includes solar panels, a geothermal HVAC system, and five electric school buses. It generates more energy than it uses.
During his visit, Wilson read a book on recycling to kindergarten children and spoke with middle school students about renewable energy sources.
