Farmers markets across North Carolina will participate in National Farmers Market Week from August 3 to 9. The event highlights the importance of farmers markets in supporting local agriculture, rural economies, and access to fresh food.
There are more than 350 farmers markets and roadside stands throughout North Carolina. These venues connect residents with local farmers and producers, contributing to the state’s agricultural economy, which is valued at $111.1 billion.
“Farmers markets are cornerstones of our communities,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “They create essential opportunities for farmers to sell directly to consumers, while giving families access to seasonal, locally grown food they can trust.”
Many North Carolina farmers markets accept SNAP/EBT benefits. Some also offer programs like Double Bucks, which match funds for fruits and vegetables purchased by eligible shoppers.
During National Farmers Market Week, events such as cooking demonstrations, live music, kids’ activities, farm tours, and vendor spotlights will take place at various locations. The public is encouraged to support local markets by shopping there and sharing their experiences on social media using hashtags including #GottoBeNC, #ShopLocal and #NCFarmersMarkets.
Suggestions for participation include visiting a market during the week, attending special events, sharing stories online, or buying local products year-round.
“Whether you’re a longtime market regular or visiting for the first time, National Farmers Market Week is a perfect opportunity to connect with fresh food, support farmers and be part of North Carolina’s thriving local food movement.”
