Eight local governments in North Carolina have been awarded over $12 million in grants from the state’s Community Development Block Grant – Neighborhood Revitalization (CDBG-NR) program. The funding is intended to support housing and public improvement projects for low- and moderate-income residents.

Governor Josh Stein commented on the importance of these grants, stating, “Strong neighborhoods depend on affordable homes and economic opportunities. These grants will enable local leaders to improve housing and public spaces, helping families build stability and supporting long-term economic growth for North Carolinians across the state.”

Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley added, “Grants from the Neighborhood Revitalization program help advance our long-standing mission to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians. These funds will help Hurricane Helene-impacted areas as well as other rural communities improve economic prosperity for their residents.”

The CDBG-NR program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered through North Carolina’s Rural Economic Development Division, allows eligible municipalities and counties to address their most urgent community development needs. The current round provides up to $5 million per project.

Communities receiving funding include Avery County ($5 million), Town of Bethel ($950,000), Town of Elm City ($950,000), Jackson County ($2,530,647), Town of La Grange ($950,000), Town of Nashville ($950,000), Town of Sandyfield ($143,412), and Town of Wallace ($556,400).

Since 2017, more than $355 million in CDBG grants have supported projects throughout North Carolina aimed at providing adequate housing, improving living environments and infrastructure development while expanding economic opportunities. At least 70 percent of grant funds are designated for activities that serve low- or moderate-income households.
