People near North Carolina State University may observe new roadside traffic signal equipment as part of a multimodal connected vehicle pilot project. This initiative, supported by a $2 million grant from the Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program, aims to evaluate connected vehicle applications in the vicinity of the NCSU campus. The project is designed to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and transit riders through advanced technology.
The pilot focuses on major roads such as Hillsborough Street, Western Boulevard, Avent Ferry Road, and Gorman Street. Traffic signal controllers have been replaced and additional hardware installed at 27 intersections to facilitate communication within the system. The objective is to create a connected environment using real-time data to improve safety, reliability, connectivity of the transportation system, and overall transportation efficiency. This aligns with NCDOT’s mission “to connect people, products, and places safely and efficiently.”
As part of this initiative, partners have developed a mobile app named YU2X. The app provides users with real-time alerts and information like current traffic signal phases, pedestrian warnings, and speed advisories. It is available for download on iOS devices via the Apple Store or Android devices via Google Play.
Virtual public meetings are scheduled for February 11 and February 13 where individuals can learn more about the pilot project, ask questions, and engage with NCDOT representatives.
