Mecklenburg County reopened the Naomi Drenan Recreation Center, Grayson Park, and Grayson Skatepark to the public last week, following extensive renovations, according to a May 4 announcement.

The reopening is significant for local residents as these facilities have served as important gathering places in Charlotte’s Grier Heights, Cotswold, and Wendover-Sedgewood neighborhoods. The upgrades aim to enhance recreational opportunities for families and community members.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday with county leaders and neighbors present. Mecklenburg County Commissioner Laura Meier said during the event, “Naomi Drenan Recreation Center has been woven into community life here for nearly 50 years, Grayson Skatepark for 20 years. Generations have played, learned and grown here. The spirit and legacy of the center’s namesake Naomi Drenan — a community activist, founding member of Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, and tireless advocate for voter engagement — is alive and well.”

To further celebrate the reopening, Park and Recreation hosted a community event on Saturday afternoon that featured activities such as a bounce house, food truck offerings, and music.

The announcement comes at a time when enrollment at Mecklenburg County schools dropped by 0.4% in the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year according to data from North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction. Overall enrollment in Mecklenburg County schools totaled 153,537 students during that period as reported by state education officials.

As these updated recreation spaces open their doors again to residents of all ages, local officials hope they will continue serving as hubs for activity and connection.
