Johnson C. Smith University honored four alumni during the Arch of Triumph Gala, which took place on April 25 inside the Crown Ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center. The event brought together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to celebrate philanthropy and leadership as part of Founders Week.
The gala raised more than $420,000 for student scholarships. President Valerie Kinloch said this effort supports access and opportunity for students in what she called a “New Era of Excellence.” Four graduates were recognized for their contributions in media, public service, business leadership, and civil rights.
Jessica Williams ’04 was acknowledged for her achievements as a radio personality known as “Ms. Jessica the Girl Next Door.” Malcolm Graham ’85 was honored for his work on the Charlotte City Council and previous service as a state senator. In his remarks to attendees Graham said, “for those who came before us, we all have a responsibility to open doors for those coming behind us.”
John T. Crawford ’60 received recognition for his career in business and mentorship within education and philanthropy circles. Dorothy Counts-Scoggins ’64 was celebrated as a Civil Rights pioneer who helped integrate Charlotte schools in 1957. Counts-Scoggins reflected on her connection to Johnson C. Smith University by saying: “Eighty years ago, I first walked onto this campus with my parents,” she said. “Every time I walk onto this campus, I say, ‘I am home.'”
President Kinloch expressed gratitude toward donors by stating: “Because of you, our students are able to dream bigger, achieve more, and walk confidently into their futures,” she said. “This is what a New Era of Excellence looks like.” The evening concluded with performances from Grammy-nominated artist Musiq Soulchild and DJ SNS.
