Trevon Montez Freeman, a resident of Hertford County, has been sentenced to 90 months in prison for charges related to an armed robbery. Freeman, aged 21, pled guilty on February 11, 2025, to interference with commerce by robbery and brandishing a firearm during the incident.
Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar commented on the case stating, “Commercial armed robbery not only endangers the lives of victims and bystanders but tears at the fabric of our communities.” He emphasized the commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and providing justice for victims.
The robbery occurred on November 26, 2023, around 10 p.m., at Winton Deli located on S. Main Street in Winton. According to court documents and other information presented in court, a black male entered the store as it was closing and aimed a tan handgun at the clerk and her nephew. The robber wore a black ski mask, Air Force 1 shoes, and a black hoodie while ordering the clerk to hand over money from the register amounting to $257 before fleeing.
Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes praised his team’s efforts: “The professionalism, dedication, and commitment shown by our team reflect our ongoing mission to protect the citizens and businesses of Hertford County.” He reiterated that crimes will not be tolerated in their community.
Surveillance footage confirmed that Freeman brandished a tan handgun with an attached light during the robbery. A deputy recognized Freeman’s voice from the video. Later that night, deputies stopped Freeman’s car for speeding near his residence. Inside were items linking him to the crime: a black jacket matching descriptions from witnesses and nearly $200 in cash found in his possession.
Daniel P. Bubar announced this outcome following sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II. The investigation was conducted by both the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jake D. Pugh and Phil Aubart prosecuting.
