The City of Greensboro announced on May 1 the launch of a new tenant-based rental assistance program aimed at helping residents access safe and stable housing. The initiative is funded through the American Rescue Plan’s HOME Investment Partnerships Program as well as Nussbaum Housing Partnership funds, and will provide more than $1.6 million in rental assistance to low-income households.
The program was approved by City Council at its March 17 meeting and will begin on June 1, continuing until fall of 2030. The city is partnering with the Greensboro Housing Authority (GHA) to administer the aid, which targets households earning 30 percent or less of the area’s median income.
“This initiative strengthens our community’s response to homelessness by providing flexible rental assistance and partnering with local providers to ensure households receive the support they need to achieve stability,” said GHA Chief Executive Officer James Cox.
Assistance will be available for eligible individuals and families who are currently on the Continuum of Care rapid re-housing waitlist or referred by partnering agencies, with all referrals coordinated by GHA. Priority will be given to those experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence, and eligible households may receive up to 24 months of support.
“This program will help reduce the waitlist in our community for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,” said Greensboro Supportive Housing Analyst Charles Gray. “Together, with our ongoing work to expand affordable housing, it reflects the City’s commitment to providing safe, secure, and dignified housing options for residents who need it most.”
