At the 40th annual Emerging Issues Forum held at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, Governor Josh Stein discussed North Carolina’s recent efforts and future plans to improve water infrastructure across the state. The forum, which has taken place since 1986, brings together leaders to address key challenges facing North Carolina.

Governor Stein emphasized the importance of water systems for public health and economic growth. “Clean, reliable water is fundamental to public health, economic vitality, and opportunity in every corner of North Carolina,” said Governor Josh Stein. “As our state continues to grow, we must make smart investments now to strengthen water systems and ensure they are built to serve North Carolinians for generations to come.”

Since assuming office as the 76th governor of North Carolina, according to the official website (https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases), Stein has overseen more than $1.4 billion in projects aimed at improving drinking water and wastewater systems and addressing contaminants such as PFAS. Of this funding, $568 million was directed toward repairing water systems damaged by Hurricane Helene.

Stein has also focused on increasing flood resilience and upgrading long-term infrastructure statewide. Last week, he announced $5.7 million in grants for eight projects through the Department of Environmental Quality’s Flood Resiliency Blueprint to reduce flood risk in the French Broad River Basin. Additionally, $7.3 million was allocated for dam repairs related to Hurricane Helene damage.

In December, Governor Stein awarded $270 million in grants supporting 58 water systems across 26 western counties. The previous summer saw more than $204 million distributed among 27 counties for projects targeting PFAS contamination and storm resiliency improvements.

The Office of the Governor of North Carolina serves all residents of the state (https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases) and carries out responsibilities including executing state laws as chief executive, leading the Council of State (https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases), directing budget priorities, granting pardons (https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases), appointing executive officials, and serving as commander in chief of the North Carolina National Guard (https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases).
