FOIA Request to Union County Register of Deeds Regarding Property Sales Records/Transactions on May 2, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Old North News have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Union County Register of Deeds. The request seeks access to records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., specifically a list of all properties and their most recent sales, along with all available metadata related to these transactions.
The requested information includes critical details such as the Recorded Instrument ID, Transaction Date, Transaction Amount, Transaction Type, Buyer Name, and Seller Name. These records are essential for us in fulfilling our professional responsibilities as members of the media. Access to public records allows us to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public.
We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request. Our role is crucial in disseminating information that informs and empowers citizens.
Additionally, we are affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Missouri Corporation. This organization assists news media companies, publications, and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies. By leveraging Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws, we aim to pull back the curtain on government actions and help inform the American electorate.
