FOIA Request to New Hanover County regarding new contracts or amendments on February 1, 2026.
On February 1, 2026, Old North News submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to New Hanover County in North Carolina. The request sought access to records related to new contracts and any amendments to existing contracts that were executed, approved, or became effective during the immediately preceding calendar month.
The specific records requested include details such as the title of the contract or amendment, names of contracting parties, effective and approval dates, contract amounts or amended values, and descriptions of the goods or services covered. The request emphasizes that it seeks only existing records and does not require the creation of new documents.
Old North News made this request under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., highlighting its role in gathering information for public dissemination. The organization also requested a fee waiver based on its status as a media professional involved in reporting news to the public. Additionally, they are affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization that assists media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies.
Of note is that out of 1,816 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in New Hanover County school districts, only 547 (30.1%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year.
