FOIA Request to Montgomery County regarding new contracts or amendments on February 1, 2026.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by Old North News to Montgomery County, North Carolina, seeking records of new contracts and any amendments to existing contracts that were executed, approved, or became effective during the immediately preceding calendar month. The request was made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., with a preference for receiving the information in electronic format.
The requested records include several specific details: the title of the contract or amendment, names of contracting parties, effective and approval dates, contract amounts or amended values, and descriptions of the goods or services covered. This request is intended to gather information of public interest for dissemination to the public and does not require the creation of new documents.
Old North News emphasized that if any portion of this request is denied or withheld, they seek a specific statutory basis for such denial and ask for all reasonably segregable portions of the records to be released. As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency, they have requested a fee waiver.
Additionally, Old North News is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization assisting media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies through FOIA requests. More information about this coalition can be found on their website here.
Of 195 senior students taking the reading portion of the ACT in Montgomery County school districts, 31 (15.9%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year.
