FOIA Request to Hoke County regarding new contracts or amendments on February 1, 2026.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by Old North News to Hoke County on February 1, 2026. The request seeks access to records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. Specifically, the media organization is requesting copies of the county’s new contracts and any amendments to existing contracts that were executed, approved, or became effective during the immediately preceding calendar month.
The requested records should include details such as the contract or amendment title, names of contracting parties, effective and approval dates, contract amounts or amended values, and descriptions of the goods or services covered. The purpose of this request is to gather information of public interest for dissemination to the public. Old North News emphasizes that it does not require the creation of new documents but only seeks records that currently exist.
In case any portion of this request is denied or withheld, Old North News has asked for a specific statutory basis for denial and requests that all reasonably segregable portions of the records be released. The organization prefers to receive these records in electronic format if available.
Old North News highlights its role in gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency. As a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit corporation assisting media companies in investigating governmental agencies—the organization believes it qualifies for a fee waiver as a media professional.
Of 489 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in Hoke County school districts, 55 (11.2%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year.
We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
