A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Halifax County Election Department in North Carolina on October 30, 2024. The request was made by Old North News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

In the FOIA request, we at Old North News sought access to records related to pre-election testing of voting machines. Specifically, we requested for these records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., preferably in electronic format.

The specific fields we requested in the report include the test date, machine manufacture, machine model number, and machine status indicating whether it passed or failed the test.

As members of the media committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, we believe access to such records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. In light of our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also requested a fee waiver as media professionals.

We await a response from the Halifax County Election Department and will continue to keep our readers informed about developments regarding this request.
