FOIA Request to Durham County Register of Deeds Regarding Property Sales Records/Transactions on May 2, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Old North News have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Durham County Register of Deeds. Our request seeks access to a list of all properties and their most recent sales, along with all available metadata related to these transactions. Specifically, we are interested in obtaining details such as the Recorded Instrument ID, Transaction Date, Transaction Amount, Transaction Type, Buyer Name, and Seller Name.

This request is made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., and we have expressed a preference for receiving this information in electronic format. As members of the media dedicated to gathering and reporting news to the public, access to these public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.

Additionally, given our role in disseminating information, we believe we qualify for a fee waiver as media professionals. We are also affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Missouri Corporation that assists news media companies and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies. This organization leverages Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to provide insights into government actions and help inform the American electorate.

We look forward to receiving the requested information promptly and will continue our efforts to deliver transparent and accountable journalism.
