FOIA Request to Cumberland County Register of Deeds Regarding Property Sales Records/Transactions on May 2, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, Old North News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Cumberland County Register of Deeds. The request seeks access to records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., specifically requesting a list of all properties and their most recent sales. We have asked for this information in electronic format and have detailed the specific metadata we are interested in obtaining.

The requested data includes:
– Recorded Instrument ID
– Transaction Date
– Transaction Amount
– Transaction Type
– Buyer Name
– Seller Name

Access to these public records is essential for us as media professionals to fulfill our responsibilities, which include holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we qualify for a fee waiver as members of the media.

Additionally, we are affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization that assists media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. This collaboration aims to enhance transparency and inform the American electorate about government actions.

We await a response from the Cumberland County Register of Deeds and are prepared to address any questions they may have regarding this request.
