FOIA Request to Caldwell County regarding new contracts or amendments on February 1, 2026.

On February 1, 2026, Old North News submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Caldwell County in North Carolina. The request sought access to records related to new contracts and any amendments to existing contracts that were executed, approved, or became effective during the immediately preceding calendar month.

The request specified the need for information including the title of the contract or amendment, names of contracting parties, effective and approval dates, contract amounts or amended values, and descriptions of the goods or services covered. The requester emphasized that this information is intended for public dissemination as part of their journalistic duty to provide transparency and hold public institutions accountable.

Old North News requested these records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. ยง132-1., and expressed a preference for receiving them in electronic format if available. They also mentioned their eligibility for a fee waiver as media professionals due to their role in gathering and reporting news.

Additionally, it was noted that the requester is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies through FOIA requests. More information about this organization can be found on their website: https://stopsecrecy.org/about/.

Of 739 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in Caldwell County school districts, 132 (17.9%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year.
