The N.C. Forest Service Incident Management Team continues to prioritize public and firefighter safety as they manage the Sunset Road Fire in Brunswick County. Motorists are advised to be cautious due to wildland fire engines and large equipment operating in the area, especially during rain which can reduce visibility.

As of Friday morning, the fire has affected 1,331 acres with containment now at 56%. Crews have made significant progress in extinguishing hot spots around the fire perimeter, focusing particularly on areas in the northeast section and southern tip. “Now’s the time for us to dig in our heels and make sure we get every bit of heat out of this fire,” stated Operations Section Chief Trainee Weston Vandenabeele. He added that incoming rain would aid their efforts to cool down hot spots and manage debris.

The wildfire began on May 2 in Boiling Spring Lakes. Fortunately, no homes have been destroyed, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Containment percentage indicates sections of the fire line that pose no risk of escape without further intervention from firefighters.

Weather conditions may influence firefighting efforts, with a sea breeze expected around noon likely bringing showers and storms by afternoon. Winds are predicted to shift southwest at 5 to 7 mph later in the day, with gusty winds possible near thunderstorms. A cold front could lead to more scattered showers over the weekend, while low pressure early next week may result in prolonged unsettled weather.

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains effective up to 3,000 feet altitude until further notice. Detailed information is available online. The public is reminded that flying drones within TFR zones is illegal and poses risks to pilots and firefighting operations.
