The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries announced on Mar. 27 that it is seeking applications from commercial and recreational fishermen, scientists, and interested parties to serve on the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan Amendment 5 Advisory Committee.

The advisory panel will help the Division develop Amendment 5 to the state’s Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan. The goal is to expand recreational access to flounder fishing while continuing efforts to rebuild the Southern Flounder stock and address issues in the commercial fishery.

Applicants must submit their materials by April 10, 2026. Those selected will participate in an in-person workshop from June 2 through June 4 at Carteret Community College in Morehead City. During this three-day session, committee members and Division staff will work together on potential management measures for Southern Flounder in a collaborative setting.

Individuals with expertise or experience in Southern Flounder fisheries are encouraged to apply, including fishermen from all coastal regions as well as scientists and representatives from non-governmental organizations. To qualify, applicants must not have had a significant fisheries violation within the past three years.

Advisors who complete necessary paperwork will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses related to their official duties. Applications can be submitted online or by mail, with details provided by the Division of Marine Fisheries. The chairman of the Marine Fisheries Commission will appoint members from among those who apply.
