A person held at Pasquotank Correctional Institution died Friday in what authorities suspect was a suicide.

Tyrus Sanders, identified by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction as inmate #0357855, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 8:30 p.m. Prison staff attempted life-saving measures, but local emergency medical services pronounced him dead at 8:52 p.m.

Investigations into the death are being conducted by law enforcement and the state medical examiner, as is standard procedure for deaths occurring in custody. The NC Department of Adult Correction stated it is cooperating fully with these investigations and has also launched its own internal review.

Sanders, age 49, had been convicted on habitual felon and drug trafficking charges in July in Catawba County. His projected release date was set for 2041.
