A person held at Scotland Correctional Institution died on October 28, 2025, in what authorities believe was a suicide.

Brandon James Lee, identified as inmate #1625202, was discovered unresponsive in his cell around noon. According to officials, staff members attempted life-saving measures. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at 12:32 p.m.

“Law enforcement and the state medical examiner are investigating, which is required in the death of someone in custody. The NC Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully with those investigations and is conducting its own.”

Lee, age 44, had been convicted of first-degree murder in Wake County in 2019 and was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
