The City of Durham announced on May 1 that a series of road and lane closures will take place in the American Tobacco District throughout early to mid-May due to ongoing waterline replacement work.
The city said the closures are necessary to allow for installation of new waterlines and sanitary sewer systems, as well as pavement restoration. The announcement aims to keep residents informed about disruptions and ensure continued access to local businesses and facilities during construction.
According to the update, no work is planned for Saturday, May 2 or Saturday, May 9 because of scheduled events in the area. The city extended best wishes to Garmin Marathon participants and organizers taking part on those weekends. During the weeks of May 4-8 and May 11-15, lane shifts and closures will occur on Mangum Street, Roxboro Street, Dillard Street, Jackie Robinson Drive, and Blackwell Street at various points between Dillard Street and Jackie Robinson Drive. Work hours are scheduled from 7 AM to 7 PM each day.
Traffic control signs will be used throughout the affected areas for lane shifts or detours. The city stated that access to businesses near work zones will be maintained at all times. While noise levels above current ordinance limits are expected during working hours, there are no anticipated disruptions in water or sewer service during this period.
Specific plans include maintaining westbound traffic on Jackie Robinson Drive while coordinating parking facility access; eastbound traffic on Dillard Street will be detoured via Mangum Street, Morehead Avenue, and Roxboro Street with continued access provided for parking facilities and the Durham County Justice Center. Pavement restoration efforts will also result in temporary road closures along Blackwell Street between Pettigrew Street and Jackie Robinson Drive.
