After completing a degree in Economics, many graduates from North Carolina public universities face a variety of career paths. Data from NC TOWER shows that 12% of Economics majors with a Bachelor’s degree choose to continue their studies in graduate programs, often focusing on areas such as Economics, Law, or Public Policy.
For those entering the workforce immediately after graduation, about 60% find employment within North Carolina during their first year. The largest portions of these graduates start their careers in Professional & Business Services (34%) and Financial Activities (25%). Other new graduates begin working in sectors like Leisure & Hospitality (20%) and Retail Trade (17%), which are often considered entry-level or transitional positions. Smaller numbers take jobs in education, utilities, transportation, or wholesale trade.
The data also indicates that as time passes, more Economics graduates move into higher-paying industries such as Financial Activities and Professional & Business Services. Their salaries tend to increase significantly over time, sometimes tripling compared to initial earnings. Fewer remain employed in lower-wage sectors as they gain experience and seek positions better suited to their skills.
