Buesgens and Tucker win titles as NC State opens wrestling season at Southeast Open

NC State wrestling began its 2025-26 season with a strong showing at the Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia. The tournament took place on November 2 at Roanoke College and saw participation from 15 members of the NC State team.

Koy Buesgens, ranked 14th nationally, won all four of his matches to claim the title in his bracket. In the finals of the 149-pound division, Buesgens defeated seventh-ranked Willie McDougald of West Virginia, who is a three-time NCAA qualifier.

Brogan Tucker also secured a championship in his collegiate debut by winning the 157-pound freshman/sophomore division. Tucker went undefeated with five wins and narrowly beat teammate Latrell Schafer with a score of 5-4 in the final match.

Troy Hohman finished third in the open division at 133 pounds. He advanced past Ethan Oakley of North Carolina, who is ranked 14th, by scoring a takedown after trailing in the third period during their quarterfinal bout.

Four out of fifteen NC State wrestlers placed on the podium in their respective brackets at this season-opening event.

Looking ahead, NC State will host Northern Colorado for its first dual meet of the season at Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday at 6 p.m. The event will also feature Vincent Robinson’s national championship banner reveal before competition begins.
