Today, the Black Cove Complex fires in Polk and Henderson counties have been analyzed, with a total size of 7,672 acres. The Black Cove section accounts for 3,502 acres and 36% containment, while the Deep Woods area covers 3,971 acres with 32% containment. The Fish Hook area, fully contained, spans 199 acres.
The fires were caused by powerlines in the Black Cove and Fish Hook areas, while the cause for Deep Woods is still under investigation. Resources on site include 45 engines and 375 personnel.
A State of Emergency was declared by Governor Josh Stein on Tuesday, March 26, to enhance the response to the wildfires in Western North Carolina. Additionally, a ban on open burning statewide began on Friday, March 21. All burning permits have been canceled, and no new permits will be issued until further notice.
Today, increased humidity and expected rainfall are helping minimize fire behavior. The focus has been on patrolling, mop-up operations, and suppression repair, particularly in steep terrain areas to mitigate environmental impacts such as sedimentation.
Evacuation levels are being continuously assessed and updated. For information on evacuation notices, individuals are advised to refer to Polk and Henderson County’s websites. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place at a height from the surface to 5,500 feet, as firefighting aircraft operate low to support ground personnel. The presence of drones can disrupt these operations and pose a safety risk.
