The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources (DWR) has been informed about an animal waste spill affecting Carltons Mill Run creek in Duplin County.

Earlier this week, DWR staff were notified of a spill from C&J Finishers farm, located on Carrolls Road near Warsaw. The incident was caused by a broken irrigation hydrant, resulting in approximately 95,000 gallons of waste reaching an unnamed tributary of Carltons Mill Run. This stream flows toward Stewarts Creek. The spill started on March 4 and continued until early March 5.

The permittee managed to contain and remove the waste from the affected stream. DWR staff have collected samples to assess further impacts. They have confirmed that there are no public drinking water system intakes in the impacted area.

DWR will keep monitoring water quality in the region. Information on future actions taken regarding the spill will be available in the permit file on Laserfiche.
