A chef from Charlotte has decided to put his culinary abilities to use by preparing meals for Ukrainian refugees at Poland's border.

Robert Adler, also known as Chef Ernie of Ernie's Smokehouse, will spend 10 days in the Polish town of Przemysl working with World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that currently serves hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Adler, who plans to leave near the end of May, will prepare traditional Polish cuisine and help with any other work that is needed during his stay.

“Somewhere back in my bones, generations ago, my family emigrated from the Poland and Russia areas from various towns there, so I’ve always had an interest,” Adler told WBTV.

Adler says his long-held desire to see his ancestors' home country now aligns with his desire to aid the Ukrainian people.

“This happened and it just kind of struck a variety of different chords in me. Hey, what can I really do in our part of the world to make their life a little bit better, just to help the Ukrainian people?” Adler told WBTV.

Adler also believes that his stay in Poland will demonstrate to the Ukrainian people that Americans really do care about them.

“If we can just give them hope that, yeah, there is gonna be a better day for them. This may be horrible now, but people care about you and people love you and we’re going to help you,” Adler said, according to WBTV.

He currently has a GoFundMe fundraiser for his partnership with World Central Kitchen, which has raised a little over $11,000 of its $15,000 goal.
